Day 21 - Late update

· Ruby's IWK Journey

Written by Thomas

Ruby caused us some drama yesterday afternoon and I didn't get a chance to share it. There will be another update later that covers what has happened since.

Please pray for Ruby, she has had a rough afternoon. Breathing has been more difficult and she wasn't settling. Her belly is distended and she is on antibiotics because of bacteria in her lungs. The vent is doing the breathing work now and she is on more sedatives so she can rest. Oxygen SATs have been around 80.

They are pretty sure she is fighting an infection. They have been doing a lot of testing the past few days, her temperature has been up and down (nothing serious), and now with how she is struggling that's what they think it is.

Her belly isn't the problem, but it likely isn't helping, certainly not comfortable for her.

She is back on the vent fully.

She is sedated on propofol so she doesn't fight the ventilator.

She is on antibiotics and they just gave her an antifungal.

Her white blood cell count is high.

Her SATs are now low 80s, up from mid to low 70s just before.

Please keep praying.

Hey everyone,

Ruby is stable now. She is sedated and fully ventilated again. It feels like a big step back, but she is in much a better state. Her oxygen saturation is hovering a bit above 90%, her temperature is good, and her skin is nice and pink.

They decided to put a new arterial line in (like an IV, but in an artery not a vein), her old one was from her operation and needed to be removed (it is used to measure her blood pressure and was not reading well). They also put in a new IV on her left arm so they have good access now for her meds. She was running out of access and it was getting difficult to make sure everything had a spot.

So she is in a good place now, we are breathing easier. She's going to be sedated overnight to allow her to rest and let the antibiotics and antifungals do their work.
