So not the update I was hoping to give. They had to put Ruby back on the heart pump at the end of the initially repair to give her heart a break. She will have to be on the heart and lung machine for 3-7 days before they try to challenge her heart again. The right side valve was really abnormal, instead of a slit there was a hole that was hard to patch up. When they went to try to get her heart going it was very sluggish and they had to put her on a very high dose of medication to get it to work well and then it was beating very fast. The muscle was very thick and didn't want to adjust to the difference in pressures and all the tissue was very inflamed from the surgery. So that's why they want to give it a rest. The pump will supply blood to the heart and lungs as well as the rest of her body without making her heart work. Her chest is still open, with many tubes going into keeping her blood flowing, but they covered it up with a bandage. She may require further surgery. The surgeon said the valves as they are definitely won't last a life time, so she'll definitely require more heart surgery to replace the valves when she's older, if not sooner. He said the left side was a good repair and he'd be happy to leave that side but the right was just so abnormal he can't say how things will turn out when they try her heart again. So she will be sedated and on the pump and we'll just have to wait and see. Ruby is currently being settled in the PICU and Charlotte and Tom are hoping to visit her shortly. Your on going prayers are very appreciated.
