Day 4 - Waiting

· Ruby's IWK Journey

Written by Thomas

Ruby had a good night last night. They did an xray while we were here and repositioned her a bit. Char spoke with the perfusionist and her brain perfusion is good and was really good all through the surgery since he was attending to the pump during her surgery yesterday. She is peeing on her own and doing well with that, they aren't giving her any diuretics and she isn't too puffy yet, though definitely swollen. Her heart is ejecting a bit, so the blood should hopefully be moving out of her heart enough. They are going to move her to a softer mattress later today to keep her from getting bed sores. They are starting her on some skim breast milk and low fat formula, one thing that they are worried about is chylothorax. They expected it as a potential side effect of the surgery, but when they opened her up yesterday it looked like it was already there. They still have to confirm it at the lab, but are going to treat it proactively. They did an ultrasound but it's hard to tell if her heart if the repair was successful when it's not really doing much anyway. The left side looks good but the right side is the question. They'll have to wait until she seems ready to be weaned off the pump. The plan is more of the same for today. The intensivist (she's on days for this week) said that if Ruby is doing the same tomorrow morning, then she'll be happy with that.
