Day 44

· Ruby's IWK Journey

Written by Charlotte

Making good progress.

Ruby has been doing a lot of sleeping during the day, and not a whole lot at night. But hopefully she'll get that figured out again soon. Mom came in to see her today and will be in town for a few days, which is great!

Ruby is chugging along with the weaning of her meds and the vent! They are hoping to trial her off the vent tomorrow, since they have her on CPAP mode with her oxygen set to 25%! Room air has about 20% oxygen, so she's close! She may fly, or she may need a few more days, but the fact that we are getting so close is very encouraging. Sometimes once they come off it's just for a few hours at a time or maybe go back on the vent for overnight, or maybe off completely... we'll just have to wait and see how she handles it.

They plan to take her off milrinone tomorrow morning where the wean went fine yesterday. And they also want to have the dexmedetomadine weaned by tomorrow night. So those are her last IV infusions, and with them gone then maybe they can remove her PICC line in the near future. They'll do an echo on Wednesday or Thursday to see how her heart is doing without the milrinone.

Her heart rate has been sitting in a good spot today after they increased the dose of ivabradine this morning. Hoping that continues! I guess weaning the milrinone may help with that as well, so

She got her first taste of portagen this afternoon, and I'm convinced she barely tasted it, she wolfed it down so fast. They mixed in a bit of skim breast milk to help her adjust to it, but I think she didn't need much persuading. She's like a little baby bird, she tries to eat anything that comes close to her little mouth! We will do these little "bolus" feeds throughout the day and night, in addition to her tube feeds, to help top her up and make her feel full. She seems much more settled since she's been getting them, which is great.

Please be praying that the trial goes well tomorrow and that she is able to handle being off the vent. And that all of the weaning goes well and that she won't have anything to set her back.

So proud of her, and thankful for how far she's come. Praying for all good days and continued progress in Ruby's recovery. Thank you all for your prayers and love for our girl. I'm amazed at how many of you haven't even met her, and here you are following along! ❤️
